Truckee, CA is one of my favorite towns in America. I may be biased because I love California and all of it’s hippie towns, but Truckee is honestly too cool for anyone to hate on. The mountain town has so much history and funky artists that makes it unique to many other towns in California and the rest of the states.
My favorite part about Truckee is all of the great golf courses. Schaffers Mill is probably my number one choice in the area, right behind Old Greenwood. I played Schaffers Mill for the first time in the Women’s Transamerica tournament which changes locations every year. Upon hearing it would be held at Schaffers Mill, I hopped on the opportunity to play it. Luckily, I got to play it again once more and get redemption on the 17th hole. More about that later.
Although the clubhouse is not that big at Schaffers Mill, it has an awesome pool area that is great for families to hang out at in the summer time. The staff is quite friendly too, but that seems to be the trend at all of these places. They make a damn good breakfast burrito and spicy Bloody Mary to boot.
On to the golf course. I just love this course. I don’t know what it is that makes it so awesome, but I think I just love the layout for my game. I played from the combo tees which was perfect and I shot a 78, which is fairly good for me. This course isn’t the greatest walking course- 10 and 11 are a brat to walk up. Trust me, I remember from the tournament. My poor dad caddied for me four days in a row there. Thanks again, Dad! Not that it isn’t doable, but my motto is if you can ride, then ride.
The most important thing on this course is to strategize your shot. It is another mountain course, so be careful of slope-y fairways and greens. Make sure you know where you can miss it, and that laying up may be a better option.
I know, I know. You can’t handle the anticipation any longer! My redemption on 17 was so awesome. In the tournament, I believe on the last day, I had hit my second shot into the water hazard on the right side of the green. I’m talking barely rolled in. SO ANNOYING. This time though ladies and gents, I *CRUSHED* my driver 290 down the fairway right in front of the water. Yes, 290. And yes, it was downhill. And yes, I played up further than I did in the tournament. BUT, it was still 290 okay?! So, I hit my wedge up onto the green and drain my putt for birdie. AND THE CROWD GOES WILD. By crowd, I mean my awesome new friends Amy and Paul. They are my best cheerleaders and I wish they could be with me during every round!
Also, on number 8, my second shot HIT the flag. Yes, hit the flag! I wish it would’ve dropped straight down and in the hole, but unfortunately it ended up rolling about 10 feet away. Another birdie, wahoo!
Now, on to Truckee Thursdays! I’m a sucker for Farmer’s Markets or anything of the sort. If you are too, then you have to check out Truckee Thursdays. It is location on Main Street, in between all of the historic buildings which house 5 star restaurants and adorable boutiques, one of which I did some damage at. Nomad Boutique is so trendy and cute, I wish I could’ve bought everything in that store! I love shopping and eating locally because I think it is important to keep cool towns like this alive. You can expect to find delicious foods, upbeat music, and trinkets and treasures at Truckee Thursdays.
I’m not sure how I can convince you any more to go to Truckee and play some awesome golf (Schaffers, Old Greenwood, Gray’s Crossing...). I’m pretty sure I have, so get off my blog and start booking your next vacay!
